Travel Alert: Updated Requirements for Visitors to Cuba
Updated: Feb. 15, 2011
Last year, the Cuban government announced new travel insurance requirements for tourists visiting Cuba. According to the decision, effective on May 1, 2010, travel medical insurance policies purchased abroad needed to be from travel insurance and/or assistance companies recognized by the Cuban government.
Please note that these travel insurance requirements for Canadian visitors to Cuba have recently been updated. Going forward, we understand that the Cuban government will accept a valid Provincial Health Insurance Plan card as proof of sufficient travel insurance coverage from Canadian travellers entering Cuba.
In addition, Allianz Global Assistance strongly recommends that Canadians also take proof of additional travel insurance (i.e. a copy of their travel insurance policy, confirmation of coverage letter or emergency assistance card) so they have the correct phone number and necessary information on hand, in case they need to contact their emergency travel assistance provider for any reason during their trip.
