With travel advisories, vaccine passports, quarantine requirements and more to consider as part of the new travel reality, it is essential that you plan every detail of your trip to ensure things go smoothly.

Do your research

With travel requirements constantly evolving, we can’t stress enough just how important doing your research is while preparing for your trip. Fortunately, there’s plenty of help available to get you up to speed on what to expect before you go. This includes regular checks of Government of Canada travel advisories as well as entry requirements specific to your destination, including any stopovers.

A good place to start is by researching answers on what to expect at your destination before you book your trip.  A key resource will be the official government website for the destination you’re visiting, and more specifically, any information sections that address entry requirements for tourists related to COVID-19.

Important questions to answer:

  • Is the country you’re planning to visit open to Canadians?
  • What are the country’s entry requirements as well as those of the region(s) and venues you’ll be visiting?
  • Are you required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccine?
  • Which COVID-19 vaccines are approved at your destination? Do you need to download a local app? (Take printed copies of important documents as back-up).
  • When and what type of COVID-19 testing is required for international travel? What costs are associated with testing?
  • Will you need to quarantine upon arrival?
  • What local COVID-19 protocols do you need to be aware of?
  • What activities can and can’t you do as a vaccinated or unvaccinated traveller?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you need to stay at your destination longer than planned?


Researching answers to the questions above will take time but it’s a critical step to ensure a safe and smooth journey. Once you have the answers to your questions for your destination and make the decision to travel, remember to continue staying up to date on any changes to the entry requirements for your destination up until your date of departure.
 

Travelling within Canada


Each province and territory has different requirements for visitors – whether you’re a Canadian resident or visiting from another country. Depending on where you’re going, this can include having no restrictions, following local requirements for visiting certain venues, and limiting activities to certain regions and communities. Understanding travel insurance during COVID-19

With every trip you take, travel insurance is a must for protecting yourself in the event something unexpected happens. Travel insurance is intended to cover losses arising from sudden and unforeseeable circumstances.

Many travel insurance providers have declared COVID-19 to be a known event. Even while Government of Canada travel advisories continue to change, COVID-19 is still considered to be a known event. Make sure your policy offers benefits for emergency medical and quarantine expenses if you test positive for COVID-19 while on a trip. For all-around travel protection, it is highly recommended to always travel with standard emergency medical coverage for other unexpected illnesses or injuries that may occur while travelling.

As with all travel protection, read your policy to learn what is and is not covered and reach out to your benefits provider, speak to the insurance broker or travel agent who sold you the policy or call the number provided in your travel insurance package if you have any questions before you leave.
