Finding a bed in
your home province

Our expert team of Physicians and Nurses will work with you and your local medical team to assess your condition and care needs, and when appropriate, confirm stability to travel and make travel recommendations.

Part of our travel recommendations include finding a hospital bed for you. If applicable and depending on your situation, our bed find team will initiate a hospital bed find in your home province once we’ve confirmed it is safe for you to travel.

  • We’ll work directly with your family doctor to secure a bed if they have admitting privileges.
  • If you don’t have a family doctor or they do not have admitting privileges, our team will contact the hospital in your catchment area that can provide the care you need and submit a request for admission. We’ll contact the accepting facility daily for an update.
  • Securing a bed can take from a few hours to several weeks as they are subject to provincial availability.
  • We’ll stay in close contact with the Case Management team to see how you’re doing.
  • Type of bed required (i.e. ICU, acute medical/surgical, rehab)
  • Isolation requirements: most facilities require that you be isolated upon arrival from outside of Canada. Additional delays could occur if either the sending or the accepting facility is experiencing an outbreak.
  • Volume of ‘overflow patients’ in the emergency ward: Hospitals need to redirect patients if they are full.
  • Availability of equipment or procedures to care for the patient’s condition.
  • Timing of bed availability as it pertains to a patient’s needs. Example: There may only be a small window of time that the patient has before a surgery needs to be done in order to have the best outcome. If a bed is not available in time, then the patient cannot be moved.
  • The patient’s home province: each province has its own bed acceptance process. Some provinces have a bed finding agency for the entire province while other provinces allow hospitals to maintain their own process.
Through all of this, your health and safety come first; and we’re here to help put you at ease while we continue to ensure you get the proper care and prepare to bring you home.
