Exclusively for CIBC retirees:

Travel medical protection and assistance

As a member of the CIBC retiree benefits program, you have access to basic emergency coverage when you travel outside the province or Canada. Knowing your health and finances are protected lets you enjoy your trip, worry-free.

We strongly encourage you to review the following information ahead of your trip – it will help you prepare for your experience. If you have any questions or need more information, please call Allianz Global Assistance at 1-800-513-5934.

If you require medical care while travelling, it is critical that you contact Allianz Global Assistance before seeking treatment. Our caring and experienced in-house medical team is ready to help you 24/7.

Our Emergency Assistance Specialists will guide you to the most optimal healthcare solution based on your condition and location, arrange payment on your behalf whenever possible, and share important information and next steps related to your claim. They can also connect you with Virtual Care from an MD via video or teleconference when appropriate.

In a life-threatening medical emergency, get to a hospital immediately and have a family member or friend call Allianz on your behalf within 24 hours of admission and before any surgery is performed.

We’ll ask for your HR ID, so please have it ready when you call.

Remember to keep all original invoices, receipts and reports – you might need them in the event of a claim.

Whether your dream trip involves exploring the Galapagos Islands or marveling at the beauty of Canada’s Northern Lights, it’s important to keep at least one foot in reality. Here are some ways to immerse yourself in the moment and stay safe while you do:

  • Keep your wits about you and be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you wouldn’t engage in certain activities at home, consider avoiding them while you’re travelling.
  • Leave your itinerary with your hotel.
  • Store valuables such as expensive jewelry, large amounts of money and extra credit cards in a hotel or bank safe.
  • Only carry the money, credit cards and other valuables you’ll need for each day, outing or activity.
  • Conceal valuables that you’ll carry with you while you’re out and about.
  • If you must travel alone at night, stick to brightly lit, well populated areas.
  • Know how to dial 911 in the country you’re visiting.
  • Be sure to eat and drink according to your activity level and environment.
  • Continue to take your medication as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Keep your wallet card handy and use the information on it to contact us if you need emergency assistance while travelling.
  • Apply sunscreen in sunny conditions – at any time of year.
